Eos: the New Age
Perhaps the greatest legacy of the ancient Emkari people, the living constructs known collectively as “warforged” are sentient, willful, and curious species formed of metal, stone, and wood. The first warforged were discovered by a 1557 Royal Historical Society expedition into a comparatively large series of Emkari ruins near Haplos in Valan. Six partially-destroyed bodies of warforged were found in various spots in the ruins, though all were beyond repair and served as little more than curiosities to the explorers. The six were heavily examined and much of warforged physiology was discovered from these corpses.
The first functional warforged discovered was in a sealed chamber deep in a cavern system near Dhul Garad, and was stumbled upon by accident in 1564. The warforged, in complete torpor, was awakened by a small group of treasure-seekers who were notably startled. They were more startled when the animate began to mimic their language, acquiring a functional command of the Common tongue in the span of minutes. When the adventurers returned to Dhul Garad with their new companion, it was quickly brought to the attention of the Society. They examined the warforged, who had by this point begun referring to itself as masculine and by the name “Relic” due to the commonness of the word spoken around him, and quickly began to realize that not only was the constructed man sentient, but in a way alive. Regrettably for the Society, Relic did not possess any memories of his Emkari creators, or of anything prior to the adventuring group discovering him. He was transported to Palanar City soon thereafter for further study, and still remains there to this day.
What has been discovered about the warforged, which has been reinforced every time a new functional unit is discovered, is that they possess an uncanny ability to learn for a very short time, acquiring language and understanding of their surroundings and in a sense programming themselves to interact with whatever environment in which they awaken. While the warforged possess a somewhat dry and flat emotional range, distinctions between individuals is definitely present, and they are often taken with a powerful curiosity of the world. Many wish to find others like themselves and to learn more about their origins and creation processes, as the methods are still mysterious despite all attempts to learn more about them. Some thirty or so warforged have been discovered and activated throughout Galotte, and whenever one is found it is a cause of great commotion, as it is always hoped that this one may contain some clue into their mysterious past.
